BLOG: CINEMA TOAST

  • Don't assume that Lance Daly's tale of two ragamuffin Irish kids who run away to Dublin will be full of good cheer. If anything, KISSES is the complete opposite as we see a slice of Irish poverty seldom seen onscreen. Dublin stands in for OZ as the young boy and girl search for an elusive brother and the film evolves from the black-and-white of home to the colorful world of a Dublin Christmas. Steve Carell makes Dinner for Schmucks worthwhile, Kisses kids framed by Irish poverty
  • In Lisa Cholodenko's The Kids Are All Right, lesbian couple are surprised and challenged when their two college-bound kids announce they want to meet the sperm donor who helped create their lives. Outstanding performances all around, a literate script, strong direction and a true family dramady, this is one worth seeing. Salt tres Angela Jolie, The Kids are All Right lovingly real
  • You will either have to play very close attention to "Inception" , or see it again because the strong cast of international stars, the writer/director from 'Memento' and 'The Dark Knight,' the music of Hans Zimmer, the cinematography of Wally Pfister and the stunning special effects and visuals combine to make this movie fresh and exciting. In this future, ideas can be extracted from people while they sleep, but a Japanese businessman wants to reverse the process and implant an idea in a rival's mind. He recruits a team with the promise that they can return to their home country and family again. Philip K. Dick would have loved this film. Inception outstanding, Sorcerer's Apprentice recycles Mickey Mouse

His nefarious deed requires that he adopt three small girls and use their cuteness for evil but.. Fresh and original, this animated 3-D tale has an ending that will dazzle and surprise you. Even I didn't see it coming. Despicable Me has delightful surprises, Girl Who Played With Fire smolders
  • Labeled a romantic comedy, Cyrus is more like a murder mystery where a self-styled 'Shrek' meets a beautiful princess guarded by her overly protective grown son. The result is quite fascinating in an indie, auteur sort of way and the fine ensemble cast actis 'real' throughout. First 20 minutes of Coco Chanel and Igor Stravinsky great, Last Airbender stinks

  • Harvey Pekar died yesterday. He was 70. For the comic book world, this is a big blow. Pekar was one of the three people tied to the rise of underground comix in the 60s/70s. The other two are Art Spiegelman and R. Crumb. Though there were others, these three men were instrumental, in my opinion, [...] American Splendor

  • “Justice League of Shakespeare.”That is how writer Anthony Del Col pitched IDW's new series “Kill Shakespeare,” which just had issue 2 hit the stands last week. The premise is a simple one: Hamlet, prince of Denmark is tossed out of his kingdom after he kills the king's (his uncle) top advisor, Polonius, while attempting to [...] Kill Will
